Overview
The role of Tax Compliance Auditor II involves the examination of business licensing and retail tax submissions, alongside the execution of audits on various entities to assess their adherence to tax regulations and filing accuracy. This position requires the adjustment of revenue data based on findings from verification sources, including seed-to-sale data provided by the relevant regulatory authority, as well as the management of payments and returns as necessary. Responsibilities include drafting correspondence, compiling data spreadsheets, and preparing audit reports and summaries, while also providing assistance to departmental staff with technical inquiries.
Key Responsibilities
The essential functions of this position encompass core duties that are standard across the classification series, and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities. Conducts audits of tax filings, financial documentation, and supporting records to ascertain tax obligations and ensure compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations. Investigates tax records and performs interviews, which may include field assessments, to gather and clarify necessary information. Identifies discrepancies, issues, and non-compliance, providing recommendations for corrective measures based on audit results, which may include refunds, penalties, or late fees. Offers technical guidance and consultation to ensure uniform application of state tax laws, discourage tax evasion, promote voluntary compliance, and educate taxpayers. Communicates audit findings, which may involve tax assessments, delinquencies, penalties, and interest owed; collaborates with taxpayers and their representatives to facilitate compliance. Engages in ongoing education to stay updated on auditing standards, methodologies, techniques, and best practices. Utilizes commercial and proprietary automated information systems and software to research, review, analyze, document, and report on financial data. Prepares and submits audit summaries and reports that accurately document findings and supporting evidence, recommending appropriate agency actions. Participates in meetings, conference calls, or on-site evaluations. Provides exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders and the public through various communication methods. Effectively communicates and interacts with individuals from diverse backgrounds, abilities, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races. May draft legal documents to pursue judgments against delinquent taxpayers, secure court authorization for wage garnishments, and arrange payment plans.Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS for Tax Compliance Auditor II Candidates must possess education, training, and/or experience demonstrating proficiency in the following areas: A minimum of one year of experience in tax auditing to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations, which may include auditing tax and financial documents to ascertain accurate tax liability. At least six months of experience in analyzing tax discrepancies or related issues, developing alternatives, and recommending solutions. One year of experience in preparing audit summaries and reports that clearly and accurately document findings, supporting evidence, and recommendations. One year of experience in delivering excellent customer service regarding tax matters, including gathering information from or providing technical guidance to taxpayers or legal representatives, responding to inquiries, and resolving complaints in a professional and timely manner.-
