Overview

The role involves the examination of business licensing and retail taxation submissions, along with conducting thorough evaluations of entities to ascertain the accuracy of tax filings and adherence to relevant regulations. This includes the adjustment of revenue data based on findings derived from verifying sources, such as seed-to-sale records reported by the regulatory authority, as well as managing payments and returns as necessary. The position will entail drafting correspondence, compiling analytical spreadsheets, and preparing audit documentation, including Notices of Proposed Assessment and comprehensive audit reports.

Key Responsibilities

The essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Conducting audits of tax submissions, financial statements, and associated documentation to establish tax obligations and ensure compliance with tax legislation. Investigating tax records and performing interviews, which may involve field assessments, to gather and clarify necessary information. Identifying discrepancies, issues, and instances of non-compliance, and providing recommendations for corrective measures based on audit outcomes, such as refunds or penalties. Offering technical guidance and support to ensure uniform application of state tax regulations, discouraging tax evasion, and fostering voluntary compliance while educating taxpayers. Articulating audit findings, which may encompass tax assessments and delinquencies, and collaborating with taxpayers and their representatives to facilitate compliance. Engaging in ongoing education to stay updated on auditing standards, methodologies, and best practices. Utilizing commercial and proprietary automated systems and software to research, analyze, document, and report on financial data. Preparing and submitting audit summaries and reports that accurately reflect findings and supporting evidence, along with recommended actions. Participating in meetings, conference calls, or on-site evaluations. Delivering exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders through various communication channels. Effectively communicating and interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. May involve preparing legal documentation to pursue judgments against delinquent taxpayers and securing legal authority for wage garnishments or payment plans.

Qualifications

Requirements for Tax Compliance Auditor II Candidates must demonstrate education, training, and/or experience in the following areas: A minimum of one year of experience in tax auditing to ensure adherence to tax laws and regulations, including auditing financial documents to determine accurate tax liabilities. At least six months of experience in analyzing tax discrepancies or related issues, formulating alternatives, and advising on solutions. One year of experience in preparing clear and accurate audit summaries and reports that document findings and recommendations. One year of experience in providing high-quality customer service regarding tax matters, including gathering information and offering technical assistance to taxpayers or their representatives.
