The Hussman Institute is pleased to announce an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow. The selected candidate will engage in scientific research and investigations under the mentorship of senior staff. Additionally, the Postdoctoral Fellow will enhance institutional prestige through meaningful contributions to the scientific field.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts research on Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and associated disorders as directed by the supervising mentor, Dr. Stephan Zuchner. Prepares research documentation and technical manuscripts for publication.
  • Explores the applicability of diverse scientific principles and theories.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of cutting-edge principles and theories in genetics and genomics.
  • Develops sophisticated analytical models and systems for long-read sequencing, gene identification, expression analysis, and more.
  • Complies with University and departmental policies and procedures while safeguarding University resources.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. is required.
  • No prior experience is necessary.

Department Specific Functions

The Postdoctoral Fellow will focus on the molecular genetic dimensions of axonopathies, particularly CMT and related conditions, aiming to uncover disease mechanisms and identify causal factors.

Accountabilities:

The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct research on both peripheral and central neuropathies.

  • Utilize molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to PCR, cloning, and tissue culture. Additionally, perform RNA isolation and manipulation, including RNA extraction, RT-PCR, and quantitative real-time PCR.
  • Conduct preliminary analyses of next-generation sequencing data, encompassing quality control filtering and bioinformatics interpretation. The Fellow will acquire UNIX programming skills during training.
  • Gather information and data through observation, experimentation, and various methodologies, including operating advanced laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Analyze sequencing data from extensive sample collections.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator to review assignments and devise research plans; make minor adjustments to existing laboratory protocols and techniques as necessary.
  • Stay informed on new developments by reviewing journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to aid in the design and advancement of original procedures and techniques.
  • Supervise, train, and instruct residents, interns, students, or junior personnel in laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Potentially engage with rodent model systems.
  • Present research outcomes at laboratory meetings and conferences.
