CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts research on Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and related conditions as directed by the supervising mentor, Dr. Stephan Zuchner. Prepares comprehensive research reports and technical manuscripts for publication.
  • Explores the applicability of diverse scientific principles and theories.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of cutting-edge principles and theories in genetics and genomics.
  • Develops sophisticated analytical models and systems for long-read sequencing, gene identification, and expression studies.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. is required.
  • No prior experience is necessary.

Department Specific Functions

The Research Scientist will focus on the molecular genetic aspects of axonopathies, particularly CMT and associated disorders, with the objective of identifying disease causes and understanding molecular mechanisms.

Accountabilities:

  • Conduct research on peripheral and central neuropathies.
  • Utilize molecular biology techniques, including PCR, cloning, and tissue culture, as well as RNA isolation and manipulation techniques such as RNA extraction, RT-PCR, and quantitative real-time PCR.
  • Perform basic analyses of next-generation sequencing data, including quality control filtering and bioinformatics interpretation, while acquiring UNIX programming skills during training.
  • Gather information and data through observation, experimentation, and other methods, including operating advanced laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Analyze sequencing data from extensive sample sets.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator to review work assignments and develop research experiment plans; make minor adjustments to existing laboratory procedures as necessary.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments by reviewing journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to inform the design and development of original procedures and techniques.
  • Supervise, train, and instruct residents, interns, students, or junior personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Potentially work with rodent model systems.
  • Present research findings at laboratory meetings and conferences.
