CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Conducts research on Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and related conditions as directed by mentor and supervisor Dr. Stephan Zuchner. Prepares research reports and technical manuscripts for publication. Evaluates the feasibility of applying a diverse range of scientific principles and theories. Maintains comprehensive knowledge of cutting-edge principles and theories in genetics and genomics. Develops sophisticated analytical models and systems for long-read sequencing, gene identification, expression studies, and more. Complies with University and departmental policies and procedures while safeguarding University assets.

Department Specific Functions

The Research Scientist will focus on the molecular genetic aspects of axonopathies, particularly CMT and related disorders, aiming to identify disease causes and comprehend mechanistic molecular functions.

Accountabilities:

The Research Scientist will conduct investigations on peripheral and central neuropathies.

- Utilize molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to PCR, cloning, and tissue culture. Isolation and manipulation of RNA, including RNA extraction, RT-PCR, and quantitative real-time PCR, will be performed routinely.

- Conduct basic analyses of next-generation sequencing data, including quality control filtering and bioinformatic interpretation. The Associate will acquire UNIX programming skills during training.

- Gather information and data through observation, experimentation, and various methods, including operating advanced laboratory instruments and equipment.

- Analyze sequencing data from extensive sample sets.

- Collaborate with the principal investigator to review work assignments and formulate plans for research experiments; make minor adjustments to existing laboratory procedures and techniques as necessary.

- Review scientific journals, abstracts, and literature to stay updated on new developments and gather information regarding previous experiments to assist in designing and developing original procedures and techniques.

- Mentor, train, and instruct residents, interns, students, or junior personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures.

Potentially engage with rodent model systems.

Present research findings at laboratory meetings and conferences.
