Job Summary

The University Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate University Attorney to provide comprehensive legal advice and counsel to East Carolina University. The successful candidate will assist the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsels in advising the Chancellor, the Board of Trustees, and other senior administrators on various legal matters, including employment relations, student affairs, public records, contracts, and litigation.

Key Responsibilities

Provide legal advice to administrators regarding enforcement of disciplinary standards and policies for faculty and staff, including matters of recruitment, hiring, and discharge of employees.

Provide legal advice to administrators regarding disciplinary standards and policies for students, including matters of student conduct, academic integrity, and Title IX compliance.

Serve as a resource and provide legal advice regarding subpoenas, court orders, and public record requests, including reviewing records and redacting, as appropriate, prior to production to the requestor.

Respond to inquiries, charges, or complaints registered by or with external regulatory and law enforcement agencies, including conducting or assisting with internal investigations, marshaling evidence, and assisting in the development and articulation of University positions and responses.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and either be a current member in good standing of the North Carolina Bar or eligible for admission to the North Carolina Bar within one (1) year of hiring. A minimum of five (5) years of legal practice experience is required. Preferred experience includes relevant experience involving employment law, litigation experience, contract law, and higher education law and/or public sector law.
