Position Overview:
The devices engineered at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories are integral to the stability of the power grid. They mitigate blackouts, enhance safety during outages, and incorporate advanced cybersecurity, automation, and communication technologies. As an Automation Engineer within Engineering Services, you will deliver innovative solutions and services that empower our clients to safeguard and manage essential electrical infrastructure and power systems globally.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Achieve and maintain a high level of expertise in the detailed design methodologies of SEL protection and automation systems.
  • Develop and sustain comprehensive knowledge of SEL products and their applications in electric power system protection and automation.
  • Engage in RTAC/PLC programming and system checkouts.
  • Implement and configure SCADA application packages (e.g., Wonderware, Copadata Zenon, Citect, RTAC HMI).
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control assessments.
  • Participate in commissioning activities (over 25% of the time).
  • Lead and support automation-focused projects.
  • Utilize your understanding of relay and PLC AC/DC schematics and power system one-line diagrams.
  • Design Local Area Networks (LAN) for utility and industrial applications.
  • Define communication architectures.

  • You have a solid grasp of electrical power systems or industrial automation practices.
  • You are familiar with system protection, integration, and automation applications.
  • You demonstrate autonomy and self-sufficiency.

  • You are adaptable and open to diverse challenges.
  • You are eager to learn about SEL products.
  • You are willing to travel approximately 25% of the time.
  • You have strong skills in writing, documentation, and verbal communication.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with electric power transmission, distribution, and/or generation systems.
  • Working knowledge of electric power systems and protective relay applications.
  • Experience with SCADA and PLC applications.
