Evening Respiratory Care Specialist

The Respiratory Care Practitioner delivers both restorative and interventional services to patients requiring respiratory support, whether due to chronic or acute conditions. This role involves administering various treatment modalities and monitoring their effectiveness, while also identifying when alternative approaches may be necessary. As a vital member of the Critical Care Team, the Respiratory Therapist is prepared to provide resuscitative measures when required. Furthermore, the therapist serves as a valuable resource for patient care providers, leveraging their extensive education in pulmonary medicine. Responsibilities also include performing EKGs, ABGs, and related duties.

- 1. Review all physician orders prior to administering therapeutic modalities, ensuring appropriateness and contacting nursing or medical staff for clarification as necessary.
- 2. Conduct patient assessments before and after all therapies in accordance with established policies.
- 3. Administer various respiratory care modalities as per departmental guidelines to achieve desired outcomes, documenting patient responses accurately.
- 4. Evaluate patient responses to therapy and refer any unusual or adverse reactions to the appropriate personnel immediately, following departmental protocols.
- 5. Recommend modifications to treatment plans based on patient assessments.
- 6. Engage in patient and family education regarding therapy goals, medication usage, breathing techniques, and equipment management.
- 7. Collect and update relevant clinical data for patient treatment, documenting this process in accordance with departmental policies.
- 8. Utilize the Clinical Information System effectively.
- 9. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment operation and troubleshooting in various settings as per departmental guidelines.
- 10. Perform effectively in emergency situations, employing appropriate resuscitative techniques and airway management.
- 11. Provide respiratory care and support for patients during transportation, from NICU to adult care.
- 12. Offer assistance in the event of oxygen system failures.
- 13. Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives.
- 14. Conduct EKGs.
- 15. Collect arterial blood specimens for analysis.
- 16. Cross-trained staff responsibilities include performing diagnostic testing and completing necessary documentation.
- 17. Manage and educate patients enrolled in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members and the Medical Director.
- 18. Operate all equipment safely according to manufacturer specifications, adhering to safety procedures for hazardous materials and blood-borne pathogens.
- 19. Meet performance expectations in customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and professional development as outlined in performance reviews.
- 20. Execute additional duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the department/unit.
Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Respiratory Therapy with the credential of Registered Respiratory Therapist or Certified Respiratory Therapist, with a requirement to obtain RRT credential within eighteen months. Cross-training in other departments may necessitate additional certification and training.
Experience: Entry-level practitioners may begin without prior experience but must acquire necessary skills during orientation and probation.
Licensure: A current State of Connecticut license is mandatory.
Special Skills: Cross-trained staff in Cardiology, Pulmonary Lab, and/or Pulmonary Rehabilitation are required to precept with trained staff to develop skills in these areas, including but not limited to: Pulmonary Function Testing, Methacholine Challenges, Cardiac Stress Testing, EKG/Holter/Event Monitoring, and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. ACLS certification and Cardiology training are required within one year of cross-training completion. Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist certification is required, with Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist certification preferred within six months of cross-training in the Pulmonary Function Lab.
