The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for delivering both restorative and interventional care to patients requiring respiratory support, whether for chronic or acute conditions. This role involves administering various treatment modalities and monitoring their effectiveness, making necessary adjustments as needed. As a vital member of the critical care team, the Respiratory Therapist is also involved in resuscitative efforts when required. Furthermore, the therapist serves as a knowledgeable resource for patient care providers, leveraging their extensive education in pulmonary medicine. Responsibilities also include performing EKGs, ABGs, and related duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Review all physician orders prior to administering therapeutic modalities, ensuring appropriateness and seeking clarification from nurses or physicians as necessary.
  • 2. Conduct patient assessments before and after all therapies in accordance with established policies.
  • 3. Administer various respiratory care modalities as per departmental guidelines to achieve desired outcomes, documenting patient responses accurately.
  • 4. Evaluate patient responses to therapy and refer any unusual or adverse reactions to the appropriate personnel immediately.
  • 5. Recommend modifications to treatment plans based on patient assessments.
  • 6. Engage in patient and family education regarding therapy goals, medication usage, breathing techniques, and equipment management.
  • 7. Collect and update relevant data for clinical treatment and document this process according to departmental policies.
  • 8. Utilize the clinical information system effectively.
  • 9. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment operation and troubleshooting across various settings.
  • 10. Act competently in emergency situations, employing appropriate resuscitative techniques and airway management.
  • 11. Provide respiratory care and support for patients during transportation from NICU to adult care.
  • 12. Offer assistance in the event of an oxygen system failure.
  • 13. Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • 14. Perform EKGs as required.
  • 15. Collect arterial blood specimens for analysis.
  • 16. Engage in diagnostic testing and complete necessary documentation.
  • 17. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members in the assessment, management, and education of patients in the pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  • 18. Operate all equipment safely according to manufacturer specifications and adhere to safety procedures regarding hazardous materials.
  • 19. Meet performance expectations in customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and professional development as outlined in performance reviews.
  • 20. Execute other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Respiratory Therapy with credentials as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or Certified Respiratory Therapist, with a timeline to obtain RRT credential.
Experience: Entry-level practitioners may begin without experience but must acquire necessary skills during orientation and probation.
Licensure: A current State of Connecticut license is mandatory.
Special Skills: Cross-trained staff in cardiology, pulmonary lab, and/or pulmonary rehabilitation are preferred. Staff opting for cross-training in cardiology must complete required preceptorships to gain skills in areas such as pulmonary function testing and cardiac stress testing. ACLS certification is required within one year of completing cardiology cross-training, along with the Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist certification within six months of training in the pulmonary function lab.
