Position Summary

The Respiratory Care Specialist is a qualified healthcare provider who has completed an accredited Respiratory Care program and holds a valid license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Connecticut. This role involves a comprehensive range of clinical responsibilities focused on the evaluation, treatment, and education of patients experiencing respiratory challenges. The Specialist is expected to demonstrate proficiency in all therapeutic modalities offered by the department and act as a resource for the healthcare team. This position requires expertise in providing care across various Intensive Care Units, including Pediatric and Newborn ICUs.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Deliver high-quality, age-appropriate respiratory care to patients.
    • 1.1 Evaluate patients' pulmonary conditions using both fundamental and advanced techniques, which encompass reviewing medical histories, conducting patient interviews, performing physical assessments, and interpreting blood gas results. Exhibit consistent proficiency in all assessment methodologies, including x-ray and blood gas interpretation, as well as knowledge of diagnostic tests such as PPD, overnight oximetry, peak flow measurements, arterial punctures, and sputum induction.
  • 2. Facilitate effective communication within the department through meticulous documentation of services rendered, changes in patient conditions, and therapeutic goals.
    • 2.1 Accurately document all care provided in the electronic medical record, ensuring patient identification through appropriate labeling as per hospital policy. Documentation includes ABGs, patient assessments, weaning evaluations, and other relevant parameters while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • 3. Maintain clear and professional communication with colleagues, demonstrating teamwork and leadership to enhance patient care quality.
    • 3.1 Provide concise and relevant patient reports, utilizing the SBAR format to ensure smooth transitions between shifts. Deliver comprehensive and accurate handoffs of critical clinical information regarding patient status and treatment progress.
  • 4. Commit to ongoing professional development and clinical expertise through continuous education and training. May serve as the charge therapist in the absence of the shift supervisor.
    • 4.1 Take initiative for personal professional growth by staying informed about current trends and advancements in the field, and actively participating in training sessions for staff development.
  • 5. May assist with or perform chaperone duties during patient medical procedures as required.
Qualifications

Education: Associate's degree in Science and completion of an AMA-Approved Respiratory Care Program, along with a current Connecticut Respiratory Care Practitioner license. A Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care is preferred.

Experience: Minimum of two years as a Respiratory Therapist, with at least one year at Yale New Haven Health, or three years in a critical care setting (subject to department head approval). A Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care is preferred.

Licensure: Valid Connecticut Respiratory Care Practitioner License.

Special Skills: Proficient in all ICU settings, including Pediatric and Newborn ICUs, with a strong understanding of respiratory care assessments, procedures, equipment, and documentation practices. Excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to perform under pressure and proficiency in computer applications.

Additional Information

Experience in rehabilitation settings is preferred.
