Position Summary

The Campus Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for executing the security policies and procedures of the institution while ensuring the safety, order, and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role is crucial in protecting the institution's facilities, grounds, and assets from fire, theft, vandalism, and unlawful activities. The individual must be a certified police officer as per APOSTC standards.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provides security and law enforcement services on campus, contributing to civil defense readiness.
  2. Conducts foot and vehicle patrols across the campus.
  3. Ensures the safety of students, faculty, staff, authorized visitors, and college property.
  4. Responds to and investigates incidents occurring on campus, including criminal activities and policy violations.
  5. Maintains communication with administration regarding safety and security developments.
  6. Manages the locking and unlocking of buildings and offices.
  7. Oversees authorized student activities and events to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  8. Documents incidents and prepares reports as necessary.
  9. Assists in organizing safety drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
  10. Provides training to staff on recognizing and addressing potentially problematic behaviors.
  11. Contributes to the development of security plans and emergency response strategies.
  12. Willingness to work across various campus locations and shifts as required.
  13. Adheres to the policies of the Alabama Community College System.
  14. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or GED Certificate.
  2. At least two years of experience as a police officer.
  3. APOST minimum Standards Certificate or eligibility for lateral transfer.
  4. Valid driver's license.
  5. Must meet insurance requirements of the College.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  2. Experience as a police officer in an educational environment is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  1. In-depth knowledge of law enforcement practices and security protocols.
  2. Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
  3. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  4. Capability to build and maintain effective relationships with the campus community.
  5. Ability to supervise personnel effectively.
  6. Independent judgment and initiative are essential.
  7. Physical ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  8. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  9. Willingness to travel as necessary.
  10. Ability to work with diverse groups.
  11. Capacity to navigate both campuses.
  12. Flexibility in working hours is required.
  13. Proficient in using PC, telephone, and written communication.
Physical Requirements:
  1. Ability to stand, sit, walk, or run for extended periods.
  2. Valid driver's license or ability to travel independently.
  3. Capability to traverse campus grounds.
  4. Ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 30 pounds.
  5. Organizational skills to manage complex tasks.
  6. Flexibility in working hours.
