Job Overview

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Senior Fire Alarm Systems Engineer is to develop and design fire alarm systems for various projects at Johnson Controls. This role involves leading the design efforts on large-scale, intricate projects and guiding other design team members in support of these initiatives.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Organizing and prioritizing personal workload while assisting in directing the tasks of other design team members.
  • Providing stamped approval of technical drawings, contingent upon relevant licensing or certification.
  • Facilitating reviews of complex initial designs to deliver value-engineered and code-compliant solutions as necessary.
  • Collaborating with design team members to create comprehensive technical submissions, including detailed schematics and drawings that meet specified design criteria.
  • Overseeing CAD Support Technicians in the preparation of project submissions for complex systems, including operational details, drawings, and calculations.
  • Conducting detailed calculations to ensure system designs adhere to code and standard requirements.
  • Maximizing project efficiency by managing multiple CAD Support Technicians working on concurrent projects.
  • Participating in pre- and post-project design meetings and attending customer/site coordination meetings as needed.
  • Developing bills of materials to facilitate construction processes.
  • Reviewing completed submissions alongside CAD Support Technicians for equipment application, compatibility, and compliance with specifications.
  • Providing project support to project managers post-order receipt to assist in maintaining or enhancing project margins.
  • Researching equipment applications and ensuring compatibility with project specifications.
  • Responding to inquiries from customers, contractors, and regulatory authorities as they arise.
  • Collaborating with the Project Manager during system commissioning to confirm system performance aligns with design specifications.
  • Offering technical support and design guidance to field staff and other design team members.
  • Assisting sales and project management teams with pre-sales estimate support.
  • Mentoring CAD Support Technicians in the successful completion of project deliverables.
  • Performing CAD duties on assigned projects when necessary.
  • Directing, supporting, and reviewing the work produced by CAD Support Technicians.
  • Monitoring actual hours worked to ensure accurate project coding and adherence to estimated hours.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or Drafting (AutoCAD) preferred, or equivalent field experience.
  • NICET Level III certification or higher is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the design of Fire and Security systems.
  • Proven skills in drafting/CAD, computer-based estimating/pricing, and project management.
  • Experience in Fire Alarm, Security, Nurse Call, CCTV, and/or the Construction Industry.
  • Proficient in interpreting architectural and electrical diagrams.
  • Knowledge of various electronic building systems.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical systems and their integration with fire alarm systems.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and Adobe.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
