Environmental Materials Specialist - Leading Medical Device Company - Contract Position with Potential for Permanent Placement

Position Overview:

  • Develop and implement environmental strategies, programs, and systems to ensure compliance with global, federal, state, and local product environmental regulations, as well as customer expectations and corporate objectives. Key focus areas include directives and regulations such as RoHS, REACH, WEEE, Proposition 65, EU MDD, and EU-MDR.
  • Conduct research to identify components and assemblies containing PFAS chemicals. Investigate and propose alternative materials to replace PFAS, ensuring they meet both environmental and performance criteria.
  • Oversee the testing of materials as part of the PFAS investigation process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in collaborative groups to identify PFAS chemicals within the current product range and suggest effective, sustainable, and documented alternative materials that comply with international, federal, state, and local environmental regulations and product standards, alongside design specifications.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation and records to track and report on environmental compliance and stewardship initiatives.
  • Evaluate emerging environmental trends and evolving Product Environmental Compliance regulations to lead necessary changes in both new product development and ongoing product management.
  • Advise on the selection and testing of materials to ensure they meet specifications regarding mechanical strength, strength-to-weight ratio, ductility, magnetic and electrical properties, and resistance to wear, corrosion, heat, and cold.
  • Address inquiries from tenders, customers, and interest groups related to environmental stewardship and material content of products.
  • Respond to environmental questionnaires, inspections, or audits from global regulatory bodies.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials science, chemical, mechanical, or electrical engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in materials identification, selection, and testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in materials science or chemical engineering.
  • 5 years of experience in local, state, federal, and international Product Environmental compliance practices.
  • Familiarity with regulations and best practices in areas such as RoHS, REACH, WEEE, Battery, Packaging, Proposition 65, EU MDD, and EU-MDR.
  • Experience in establishing, training, and supporting Quality Systems processes related to Product Environmental compliance.
  • Background in design or manufacturing is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear and concise reports and collaborate with team members across various organizational levels and cultures globally.
  • Demonstrated leadership, training, and coaching abilities.
  • Goal-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Organized with strong computer hardware and software skills; proficient in MS Office suite.
  • Prior experience with FDA and medical device manufacturing requirements is advantageous.
