The Senior Engineer in Transmission Planning & Engineering plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and reliability of the APS high-voltage transmission network, ranging from 69kV to 500kV. This position requires a skilled engineer who will leverage their technical expertise to advance the department's key objectives. Responsibilities include conducting various transmission studies such as power flow, transient stability, and short circuit analyses. The engineer will oversee multiple projects concurrently, ensuring effective coordination from project initiation through to construction completion. Staying updated on new technologies and industry best practices is essential. Additionally, the engineer may provide guidance and technical direction to junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate long-term transmission strategies and advocate for new investments in transmission infrastructure.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant standards and regulations (FERC, NERC, WECC, ACC).
  • Develop and maintain power flow, dynamic, and short circuit transmission models.
  • Facilitate reliable interconnections for new resources.
  • Encourage economic growth by offering innovative solutions for large-scale customers to connect to the transmission grid.
  • Conduct technical studies utilizing system simulation software like GE PSLF and CAPE to strategically enhance the transmission system while ensuring reliability.
  • Manage multiple projects of varying scales, proactively identifying and addressing potential schedule or quality issues. Utilize resources effectively to achieve desired outcomes, and liaise with external agencies and regulatory bodies as necessary.
  • Represent APS in various technical industry working groups and regional committees.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficient in power flow and transient stability studies (GE PSLF, TARA, PowerWorld, PSSE).
  • Experienced in short circuit studies (Siemens CAPE, ASPEN).
  • Familiar with NERC Standards including MOD, TPL, CIP, FAC, PRC.
  • Knowledgeable about the FERC pro forma Open Access Transmission Tariff.
  • Understanding of the southwestern and WECC transmission systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory authorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or a related applied science field from an ABET accredited institution.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in engineering-related roles.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement innovative solutions to complex technical challenges, making decisions that significantly impact organizational performance.
  2. Prepare detailed engineering plans, designs, analyses, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reviews, ensuring compliance with established standards and regulations.
  3. Integrate various elements of complex projects, addressing unique challenges and modifying guidelines as necessary.
  4. Collaborate with customers and departments to ensure project objectives align with requirements, budget, and timelines.
  5. Provide mentorship and technical support to less experienced engineers.
  6. Assist in problem-solving by critically evaluating assumptions and decisions to implement optimal strategies.
  7. Utilize industry resources to resolve key technical issues and develop effective strategies.
  8. Plan and coordinate large-scale engineering projects, acting as a technical specialist in a specific engineering field.
  9. Monitor project progress and recommend modifications to enhance operational efficiency.
  10. Research new technologies and developments, providing management with feasibility recommendations for company operations.
