Since its inception in 1910, our organization has empowered numerous individuals to acquire the necessary skills to rise above poverty, adapt to new cultural environments, and achieve both personal and professional success.

The Finance Department oversees a budget exceeding $5 million, distributed across various programs, with a dedicated team of approximately 55 staff members. The Financial Operations Manager is accountable for all accounting functions, encompassing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and administration of contracts and grants. Key responsibilities include: ongoing management of the general ledger; preparation of financial reports for diverse stakeholders; meticulous maintenance of accounting records; precise execution of financial transactions; and implementation of a comprehensive set of controls and budgets aimed at minimizing risk, enhancing the accuracy of Tacoma Community House's financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as well as grants management standards.

TRANSACTIONAL DUTIES:

  • Guarantee the accurate and timely processing of all financial transactions in accordance with GAAP.
  • Maintain the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger and associated reports.
  • Develop, implement, and uphold processes and controls that reflect current best practices in transaction processing.
  • Conduct month-end closing activities, including overhead allocations, account reconciliations, and schedule updates.
  • Oversee and process, as necessary, payroll, accounts payable, revenue and expense transactions, fixed assets, cash management, bank reconciliations, and allocations.
  • Establish and maintain an organized accounting filing system for both electronic and paper records.

REPORTING DUTIES:

  • Generate timely, accurate, and comprehensive financial statements for all organizational levels, including the Board of Directors and management.
  • Coordinate the preparation of draft audited financial statements and tax returns.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial information for the annual report.
  • Recommend and report on benchmarks for measuring organizational performance.
  • Calculate and disseminate financial and operational metrics.
  • Produce cash flow reports, annual budgets, and forecasts.
  • Analyze variances from the budget and communicate significant issues to management.
  • Provide financial analyses and models as required, particularly for New Market Tax Credit Program Qualified Active Low-Income Community Business (QALICB) compliance.

COMPLIANCE DUTIES:

  • Prepare and assist in developing audit schedules for the annual audit.
  • Propose enhancements to processes for increased organizational effectiveness.
  • Compile 990 information for the annual tax return.
  • Oversee quarterly tax payments and state registration filings.

MANAGEMENT DUTIES:

  • Lead and train accounting staff and managers within the organization.
  • Prepare and analyze accurate monthly financial and management reports, including income statements, balance sheets, budgets, and cash flow projections.
  • Develop the annual budget.
  • Maintain a systematic approach to accounts and keep detailed records of all transactions and assets.
  • Ensure control over general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, expense reports, billing, and payroll.
  • Offer valuable financial insights to support strategic decision-making and provide guidance to executive and operational management.
  • Oversee payroll functions to ensure accurate and timely payments.
  • Assist in managing grants reporting, compliance, and reconciliation.
  • Prepare various ad hoc financial scenarios as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local grant reporting requirements.
  • Understanding of private fund development financial requirements.
  • Experience in nonprofit organization management.

Experience & Skills:

  • At least 3 years of finance and accounting experience, including general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, finance team management, audit preparation, and tax filings.
  • Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, adaptable to various cultural contexts.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines while ensuring accuracy.
  • Proven ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
  • Solid experience in coordinating audit activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position primarily operates in an office setting with low noise levels, with occasional work in classrooms or lobby areas with higher noise levels. Opportunities for remote work may be available, subject to supervisor approval and departmental needs.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Employees receive a comprehensive benefits package valued at approximately 25% of their salary, including medical, dental, and life insurance, as well as participation in a 403b retirement plan after one year of service. Paid leave includes 24 days of paid time off in the first year and 12 paid holidays. After six months of employment, employees may be eligible for up to two work-from-home days per week.
