Position Overview

Role Summary:

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is looking for a qualified candidate to assume the role of Director of Academic Advising. This position entails comprehensive oversight of various academic advising functions within the institution. The Director will be tasked with the creation and implementation of efficient systems, programs, and services designed to assist students in formulating and executing their academic strategies, while also providing support to faculty and staff in their advising roles.

This is a full-time role requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week. The anticipated salary range for this position is between $55,000 and $68,000, based on the applicant's qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Management of the Academic Advising Department:
  • Oversee and coordinate professional academic advising services and initiatives across the university.
  • Ensure comprehensive staff coverage for advising services.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise designated staff members.
  • Delegate tasks, approve leave requests, conduct performance evaluations, and implement disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and supervision of student employees.
  • Act as the primary contact for the Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) representative.
  • Provide ancillary supervision for first-year and transfer advisors.
Collaboration with Faculty and Staff:
  • Facilitate an Advising Council for the University of Maine at Farmington.
  • Lead centralized registration efforts for first-year students.
  • Serve as a liaison to academic colleges and programs as needed.
  • Represent the department on relevant internal committees and external organizations.
  • Collaborate with various groups involved in academic advising initiatives.
  • Support faculty and staff in their advising responsibilities.
  • Organize and deliver professional development and training for academic advisors.
  • Create and distribute advising resources to aid students in their academic decision-making.
  • Enhance the development of Peer Academic Advising.
  • Establish communication strategies to keep advisors informed with current information.
  • Assist faculty during registration processes.
  • Participate in campus events such as new student orientation.
Student Engagement:
  • Provide both formal and informal academic advising and coaching to students.
  • Offer information or referrals regarding financial aid, veteran benefits, internships, and student development activities.
  • Advise a limited number of students and teach courses as required.
  • Deliver academic counseling to students facing academic challenges.
  • Administer institutional policies related to academic performance.
  • Serve as a backup advisor for students in urgent situations.
Administrative Duties:
  • Develop and maintain automated degree progress and planning tools.
  • Manage departmental web presence.
  • Evaluate and assess advising processes and their effectiveness.
  • Participate in special project teams as needed.
  • Oversee the budget for the academic advising department.
Qualifications:

  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
