Job Summary:

The Special Education Assistant will work as an assistant to the teacher and classroom, performing duties that support students with specific intensive needs. This role requires the ability to work well with students, staff, and parents, and to carry out tasks assigned by the teacher/supervisor. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sensitivity, patience, and flexibility in working with students with special needs.

Responsibilities:
  1. Perform duties within Special Education throughout the district.
  2. Work with students identified with intensive needs, including life skills, autism, and behavior support.
  3. Assist and support students with personal care and hygiene.
  4. Transport, supervise, and support students in job sites.
  5. Work under the supervision of the teacher/supervisor to support IEP goals and objectives.
  6. Maintain confidentiality of students, staff, school business, materials, and information.
  7. Under the supervision of the teacher/supervisor, secure and assist in the development of subject matter materials and use all types of instructional equipment.
  8. Assist students with work or projects assigned.
  9. Duplicate materials for classroom use, distribute, collect, and assist in correcting materials, and assist in instructional record keeping tasks.
  10. Help with inventory within the classroom.
  11. Assist the teacher/supervisor in fostering safety procedures.
  12. Supervise playground and/or assist on field trips that include special needs students.
  13. May provide mentoring and training to Aide IIs.
  14. May monitor the classroom independently for short periods of time when the teacher must leave the room.
  15. May include independent instruction or monitoring of groups or individual students in systems that the aide has received training in, under the close supervision of the teacher.
  16. May assist in implementing teacher developed behavior management programs for individuals, small groups, or the classroom, including the possible use of restraint techniques.
  17. May provide individual or small group assistance in the regular classrooms for resource students.
  18. Assist and support cultural activities relative to specific backgrounds of students.
  19. May be required to work with students categorized as multi-handicapped.
  20. May be required to attend IEP meetings or staff meeting when appropriate.
  21. Other duties as assigned from time to time.
