This role is situated within the Nutrition & Food Service department of the Veterans Health Administration. The main objective of this position is to oversee and guide staff in food service activities, which encompass food preparation, handling, storage, and distribution.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties Include:

Food Service Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and organize the designated station on the tray line with necessary supplies and food items.
  • Serve meals in a cafeteria style, ensuring uniform portions for customers, patients, and residents.
  • Disassemble and sanitize the station as required.
  • Arrange dining tables for service, ensuring food and beverages are presented appropriately and replenished as needed.
  • Return used trays and dishes to the dishwashing area.
  • Deliver meal trays to patients and relay any feedback or concerns to the supervisor or dietitian.
  • Prepare beverages based on the required servings.
  • Assemble fresh fruit, salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, and simple desserts in specified quantities.
  • Sort, wash, peel, and cut cold food items using appropriate tools.
  • Assist cooks in the preparation area by measuring and assembling ingredients as per standardized recipes.
Additional Duties:
  • Provide clear instructions and information to team members regarding work tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and staff about operational issues and participate in problem-solving initiatives.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and policies, assisting colleagues with inquiries.
  • Lead production and service activities in the absence of supervisory staff.
  • Demonstrate proper work methods alongside team members to establish an efficient workflow.
  • Ensure adherence to customer service standards during all interactions.
  • Monitor patient feedback in the absence of a supervisor to maintain high-quality service.
  • Conduct on-the-job training for junior food service workers and document the training provided.
  • Complete safety and sanitation inspections of food service areas, documenting any issues and initiating corrective actions.
  • Review daily work assignments and adjust as necessary to ensure productivity.
  • Assign tasks to team members and verify compliance with quality and procedural standards.
  • Ensure timely setup of food production and service areas to prevent service delays.
  • May assist with receiving food and supply deliveries as needed.
  • Review dietary changes before meal preparation and adjust individual patient tray tickets accordingly.
  • Perform final checks on trays for temperature and accuracy before service.
  • Observe and evaluate team performance, providing feedback for performance reviews.
  • Identify training needs and report any disciplinary issues to supervisors.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and assist in completing accident reports.
  • Promote proper food handling techniques and personal hygiene among staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in all work areas at the end of each shift.
  • Submit work order requests for equipment repairs as needed.
  • Communicate employee leave requests to supervisors.
Work Schedule: Variable with rotating days off.

Physical Demands: This position requires light to moderate physical effort, with potential for heavy work, including scrubbing large cooking utensils and moving heavy carts. Continuous sitting, standing, walking, and frequent bending are required.

Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is mandatory for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Probationary period may be required.
  • Background/security investigation is necessary.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all Veterans Health Administration personnel.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Experience: While a specific length of training and experience is not mandated, candidates must demonstrate sufficient training or experience that illustrates their capability to perform the duties of this position. Evidence of knowledge, skills, and abilities must be detailed in the resume.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited based on actual hours worked.

Education: No specific educational qualifications are required for this position.
