About the Role

Abbott, a global healthcare leader, is seeking a highly skilled R&D Manager to join our team in the Vascular division. As a key member of our innovation team, you will be responsible for managing and participating in the design and development of innovative medical devices or components/subsystems in support of our company's strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and conduct development work as part of a major project, overseeing and performing analyses to develop design specifications and performance requirements.
  • Provide technical information concerning manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process (advantages/limitations) engineering planning.
  • Guide direct reports to select and use techniques to solve problems and make sound design recommendations.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to other engineers and technicians, supervising other engineers and technicians performing tasks as necessary.
What You'll Work On
  • Run empirical and experimental analysis to conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design.
  • Conceive and build prototypes, working with outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community.
  • Project Planning: ensure requirements of TDP and/or PDP are followed as necessary, coordinate and manage resources to meet detailed project timelines and milestones.
  • Support animal and bench testing and clinical evaluations, ensuring that the quality system requirements are being met.
  • Define product specifications including justification and supportive testing, create product drawings and/or models, develop test methods, and hire and retain a diverse, highly qualified staff.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering-related engineering field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in R&D engineering and related functions, with experience designing and testing medical devices, preferably interventional cardiology devices.
  • Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability, project leadership and management skills, and ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with the ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15% with possibility for international travel.
