Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Immigration Legal Assistant/DOJ Accredited Representative plays a crucial role in providing legal support to immigrants and their families regarding immigration law. This position involves regular client interactions to assess eligibility for relief, gather pertinent information and documentation, and prepare necessary forms for immigration proceedings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform thorough client intakes, offering guidance, referrals, and assessing cases for potential representation.
  • Upon obtaining DOJ Accreditation, deliver legal support, consultations, and representation in immigration matters, managing a caseload focused on family-based cases and naturalization before USCIS.
  • Conduct client interviews, investigate legal issues, prepare declarations, supporting documents, and legal forms for submission, ensuring timely communication with clients, and represent clients at USCIS interviews while maintaining organized and compliant client files.
  • Assist in organizing outreach and educational workshops aimed at the immigrant community and the public, focusing on immigration issues and laws, including training community groups and other service providers.
  • Build and sustain strategic partnerships with faith and labor organizations, attorneys, government entities, students, and other community stakeholders.
  • Engage in agency, community, or coalition meetings where program representation is required.
  • Participate in ongoing education to ensure culturally competent representation and to achieve and maintain DOJ Accreditation.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Immigration Services to prepare funding proposals and ensure timely, accurate reporting for grant compliance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on the program's needs, including general administrative responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or a minimum of 2 years of experience in a professional office environment.
  • Ability to work autonomously while managing multiple tasks in a dynamic, high-volume setting, demonstrating excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office and database management.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, with strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
  • Exceptional research and writing abilities, with the capacity to engage with a diverse audience.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and occasional weekends for outreach events.
  • Capability to represent the organization publicly and think critically in high-stakes meetings with community and partner institutions.
  • Familiarity with immigration law and experience in a legal environment is preferred.
  • Eligibility for DOJ accreditation within 90 days of employment.
  • Completion of a suitable CORI and SORI check within the first thirty days of employment is required.

Supervisory Role: None

Travel Requirements: May involve travel for training, meetings, and client interviews.

Physical Requirements: This role regularly requires the employee to sit, walk, and stand, as well as use hands repetitively for standard office tasks. Occasional kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be necessary. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment: This position operates within a professional office setting and utilizes standard office equipment, including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
