Woods Hole, Massachusetts, United States Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Full time

Position Overview:

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a dedicated Electrical Engineer to contribute to the Alvin Submersible Engineering and Operations Group. This is a full-time, exempt role that comes with comprehensive benefits.

The Alvin submersible has been a pioneering vessel in ocean exploration since 1964, completing over 5000 dives and enabling significant scientific breakthroughs. Recently certified for depths of 6500m, it now has the capability to investigate more than 98% of the ocean floor.

We are looking for a motivated and technically skilled Electronics/Electrical Engineer to support our operations team. Under supervision, the successful candidate will utilize their electronic and electrical knowledge to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment related to the submersible's operations.

This role demands physical endurance, as it requires spending six to eight months annually at sea, with the remaining time spent at the institution, potentially necessitating local residency. After an initial training phase, the position allows for independent maintenance tasks on the vehicle and offers opportunities for advancement into key support roles for the submersible. Exceptional candidates may enter the Alvin Pilot in Training program, aiming to achieve qualifications as an Alvin Pilot in Command.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and adhere to established procedures for the maintenance, testing, and repair of electronic and electrical systems associated with the submersible.
  • Prepare and interface scientific instruments and sensors utilized with the submersible.
  • Maintain and repair fiber-optic systems and components.
  • Utilize electronic testing equipment such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Engage in all aspects of vehicle launch, recovery, and surface support activities.
  • Complete training to qualify as an Alvin support technician and launch coordinator.
  • Participate in the training program to become a qualified Alvin Pilot.
  • Support Alvin operations at sea for up to eight months each year.
  • Apply basic research principles and standard laboratory instrumentation in engineering design.
  • Test designs, calibrate instruments, and troubleshoot mechanical and electronic systems.
  • Develop computer and microprocessor code, utilizing CAD and CAE tools.
  • Contribute to documentation and reporting of instrumentation developments and tests.
  • Enhance technical skills to improve versatility and competence.

Qualifications:

This entry-level position is tailored to foster the application of academic training in practical, results-oriented projects supporting scientific research. Initial supervision will guide the achievement of structured objectives.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or a related field is required, with minimal work experience.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in electrical/electronic systems maintenance is preferred, or a BS in Electrical Engineering with two years of practical experience.
  • Experience at sea is advantageous, with familiarity in ROV, AUV, or manned submersible operations considered a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills for evaluating and repairing electrical and electronic components are essential.
  • Proficiency in Windows and Linux operating systems, along with knowledge of serial and network communications protocols.
  • Experience with electrical and electronic testing equipment is necessary.
  • Basic mechanical tool proficiency is expected.
  • Ability to maintain detailed documentation and reporting is crucial.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen and possess a current US passport.
  • Ability to acquire a TWIC card is necessary.
  • Sea duty is required, with the ability to swim in open ocean conditions.
  • Must pass a pilot physical equivalent to FAA 3rd class standards.

Physical Requirements:

This position involves physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and the ability to navigate confined spaces. Candidates must be able to work in various environmental conditions, including exposure to noise and potential hazards.
