Woods Hole, Massachusetts, United States Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Full time

Position Overview:

The Geology & Geophysics Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking outstanding candidates for full-time tenure track roles within our scientific team. We are particularly interested in hiring at the Assistant Scientist level, although exceptional candidates may be considered for higher ranks such as Associate Scientist without Tenure, Associate Scientist with Tenure, or Senior Scientist.

Research Focus:

The successful applicant will integrate into a multidisciplinary department with a broad range of scientific interests, including solid-earth chemical and physical processes, coastal dynamics, climate change, and the deep biosphere. We are looking for candidates whose research enhances and diversifies our current programs, particularly in the realm of global geochemical cycles influenced by solid-earth phenomena. This encompasses both fundamental scientific exploration and applied research aimed at addressing critical societal challenges.

Collaboration Opportunities:

Interdisciplinary research collaborations are encouraged, allowing for partnerships with colleagues across various scientific departments, centers, and laboratories, as well as with the wider Woods Hole scientific community. Scientific staff are expected to secure funding through grants and contracts, although the Institution provides salary support when external funding is not available, alongside substantial internal funding opportunities for innovative research initiatives.

Institutional Commitment:

WHOI is recognized as the largest private, non-profit oceanographic institution globally, employing around 1,000 staff, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students. Our mission is to deepen the understanding of oceanic systems and their interactions with the Earth, disseminating this knowledge for societal benefit. We are situated in a renowned research hub, fostering a vibrant scientific community with a significant international presence.

Diversity and Inclusion:

WHOI is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to our academic excellence and strive to cultivate a workforce that reflects these values.

Benefits:

WHOI offers a comprehensive benefits package, which includes relocation assistance, medical and dental coverage, childcare subsidies, housing support, tuition assistance, retirement contributions, vacation time, flexible work schedules, and family illness days.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a doctoral degree, relevant postdoctoral experience, and a record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. Candidates are expected to establish independent, externally-funded, and internationally recognized research programs. Opportunities for advising graduate students and teaching within the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography and Oceanographic Engineering are also available.

Application Process:

Interested candidates should submit a single PDF document containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), a three-page research statement, names of four references, and copies of up to three relevant publications. Additionally, a one-page statement addressing contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their professional experience is required.
