Position Overview

The Ship Operations Division is actively seeking a Marine Systems Engineer to become an integral part of our team. This role entails the design and supervision of the installation and maintenance of marine power systems, propulsion units, and all associated mechanical and electrical systems on our research vessels. This is a full-time, exempt position that comes with a comprehensive benefits package.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and direction to all onboard officers and crew members.
  • Oversee the repair, upkeep, and assessment of vessel machinery systems.
  • Compile and maintain documentation for inspections by regulatory bodies, ensuring compliance with U.S. Coast Guard, US Navy, National Science Foundation, and American Bureau of Shipping standards.
  • Draft specifications for scheduled shipyard maintenance, repairs, and overhaul needs.
  • Assess and manage modifications to equipment and systems to align with new regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate logistics for our vessels, including maintenance, spare parts, equipment, and machinery repairs.
  • Act as the primary contact for shipboard maintenance and repair systems, utilizing ABS Nautical Systems software.
  • Generate purchase orders and monitor expenditures in both ship and shore service accounts, contributing to the budgeting process.
  • Keep staff informed about regulatory changes affecting maritime operations.
  • Provide on-site supervision during scheduled shipyard activities as directed by the Director of Ship Operations.
  • Travel may be necessary up to 15% of the time, occasionally for extended periods during regulatory dry-docking.
  • May oversee the Ship Operations Internal Safety Management (ISM) program.
  • May coordinate fuel procurement for our global research vessels.
  • May serve as the Fleet Security Officer, ensuring compliance with Coast Guard and international security standards.
  • May act as the Fleet Oil Spill Response Coordinator, ensuring adherence to marine pollution regulations and serving as the initial contact for pollution incidents.
  • May manage the Federal EPA-VGP program for our vessels, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: A degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience, along with a minimum of 10 years in Marine Engineering.
  • Experience: Comprehensive knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping regulations.
  • Certification/License: Proven ability in planning, budgeting, organizing, and managing complex ship repair projects.
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication skills, particularly with stakeholders and the Port Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Background from a Maritime Academy in Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience: Familiarity with Diesel Electric Propulsion and Dry-dock Project management.
  • Certification/License: 3rd A/E Unlimited certification is desired; CE Unlimited is preferred.
  • Soft Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ABS Enterprise Software.
  • Possession of a valid TWIC card for maritime security access is required.
