Position Overview:

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a temporary Second Assistant Engineer to support the Ship Operations Department. This role is classified as a temporary, casual, non-exempt position and includes eligibility for casual benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safe and efficient functioning of engines, auxiliary machinery, generators, and the fuel oil system, including the maintenance of the Oily Water Separator and the Oil Record Book.
  • Oversee the operation and condition of the fuel oil system, monitor gauges, and manage equipment repairs. Supervise bunkering and fuel oil transfers.
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of engine room equipment while in port, and manage the loading of freshwater and bunkers. Maintain a detailed log of all watch operations and any unusual occurrences.
  • Stand engine room watch, supervise the Oiler, and ensure that all orders are executed properly.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in diesel engines, electrical maintenance, hydraulic systems, and HVAC equipment.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited maritime academy and two years of sea duty as an engineering officer, or equivalent experience in the absence of a formal degree.
  • Proficiency in computer applications including word processing, inventory management, and email communication.
  • Experience on similar research vessels is preferred, along with prior experience as a Second Assistant Engineer.
  • Possession of a U.S. Coast Guard License, preferably as a Second Assistant Engineer Unlimited Horsepower, Motor Vessels.
  • All licensed officers must meet training requirements as outlined by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW 95) and hold a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential.
  • Strong communication and personnel management skills, along with a thorough understanding of ship engine operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and hold a valid medical certificate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work at sea for extended periods, often in challenging conditions.
  • Capable of performing physical tasks, including lifting and handling equipment over 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass visual and hearing examinations as required.
  • Willingness to participate in emergency drills and perform duties in confined and hazardous environments.
