Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced HPC Data Center Operator to join our team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. As a key member of our Livermore Computing Operations Group, you will be responsible for monitoring, diagnosing, and repairing system faults on our large-scale high-performance computer systems, storage systems, and networks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support and monitoring capabilities for our HPC systems, including Sierra, large Linux clusters, file systems, and storage systems.
  • Apply Unix system knowledge and utilize diagnostic tools to monitor and effect basic system repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and document general software, hardware, and network issues, and apply corrective action/repairs to the problem or escalate as per defined procedures.
  • Utilize our trouble ticketing system, ServiceNow, for problem ticket tracking.
  • Receive, document, and accommodate all customer calls, particularly during off-hours, and resolve customer issues if possible, or escalate to the appropriate level.
  • Perform data center facilities monitoring, problem remediation, and emergency event response during normal daily operation and off-hours.
  • Participate in the decommission process of older HPC systems & system relocation activities.
  • Promote the use of inter-departmental resources for tools, metrics, and common solutions to team members via email and presentations.
Requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE (L/Q)-level security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Associate's degree in a computer-related field or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of general networking concepts.
  • Demonstrated experience using common Linux command line utilities.
  • General working knowledge of NAS (network attached storage) and/or RAID arrays.
  • Experience racking and stacking systems, troubleshooting, and repairing and replacing hardware components.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with customers and team members with the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Experience and knowledge of the skills needed for a customer support role to include a focus on listening, rapport-building, friendly and approachable nature, and courtesy and patience.
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing and documenting moderately complex work processes.
  • Experience administering, maintaining, repairing, and securing computer hardware, software, applications, and operating systems under minimal supervision.
  • Experience performing advanced troubleshooting in a High Performance Computing environment.

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years. If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
