Lateral Entry Police Officer

POSITION SUMMARY
A Police Officer assigned to Patrol operates under the direct supervision of the Patrol Commander and Patrol Sergeant. The Patrol Officer is sworn to enforce all laws and ordinances for which the Department is responsible; to protect the lives and property of all persons; and to maintain peace and order within the jurisdiction.
The Patrol Officer will take appropriate law enforcement actions, within the limits of legal authority, whenever and wherever required. The Patrol Officer is expected to maintain professional decorum and display a proper attitude in all interactions with citizens, superiors, and other Department personnel. Compliance with the orders, directives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of the Police Department is essential.
GENERAL APPLICANT INFORMATION
Training: Upon hiring, candidates will undergo a field training process to be determined.
Work Schedule: Typically, police officers work an average of eighty hours per two-week period, which amounts to 2,080 hours annually. Currently, the patrol division operates on 12-hour shifts, which are re-bid on an annual basis.
Direct Deposit: All employees hired must participate in the Village's direct deposit program.
Benefits: The Village offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees and their dependents, including sick leave, hospitalization, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, dental insurance, and health club memberships. Vacation and holiday benefits are also provided.
Deferred Compensation Plan: Full-time employees may participate in a Deferred Compensation Plan available through the Village.
Police Pension: All sworn police officers are eligible to apply for participation in the Police Pension Fund. Officers must make a written application to the Pension Board within three months of being appointed to the sworn position.
Uniforms: The Village will issue uniforms to personnel assigned to the Police Department who are required to wear them. If an officer separates from the Police Department before completing their initial three-year period, they will be required to reimburse the Village for the cost of uniforms.
Wage/Salary Rates: Employees are paid biweekly on Fridays with twenty-six pay periods per year.
Vacation Eligibility: Employees are eligible for vacation days based on years of continuous service, starting from ten days after one year of service to a maximum of twenty-five days after nineteen years of service.
Holidays: Each full-time police officer will receive floating holidays and regular holidays.
Requirements: Applicants for lateral appointment must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- State of Illinois certification or waiver by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
- Must be a legal resident of the United States.
- Individuals must be at least 21 years old.
- High school education or equivalent.
- Previous full-time sworn Police Officer experience within the last two years.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to comply with all position requirements and pass all examinations and training.
