Key Responsibilities

Signal Support Systems Specialists are tasked with the integration of communication systems and networks, executing signal support operations, and conducting unit-level maintenance on authorized signal devices. Their duties include the installation, operation, and upkeep of radio and data distribution systems.

Advanced team members take on supervisory roles, providing training to fellow Soldiers, maintaining and installing signal support systems, and offering technical assistance for communication and automation equipment. They are also responsible for preparing maintenance and supply requests for unit-level signal support and conducting preventative maintenance checks on assigned vehicles.

Primary Duties Include:
  • Maintaining radio and data distribution systems
  • Performing signal support functions and providing technical assistance for computer systems
  • Offering training and support for local area networks
  • Conducting maintenance on equipment, terminal devices, assigned vehicles, and power generators

Skills Acquired:
  • Understanding of mechanical and electrical principles
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures
  • Proficiency in line installation and wiring techniques
  • Familiarity with communication security policies and procedures

Desirable Attributes:
  • Interest in working with electronic devices
  • Problem-solving aptitude

Through comprehensive training, you will gain the skills and experience necessary for a successful civilian career in the communications and electronics sector. Additional education and two years of experience in electronics can lead to certification as an Associate Certified Electronics Technician.

Compensation and Benefits
Instead of incurring costs for training, you will receive compensation while you learn. In the Army National Guard, you will acquire valuable skills while earning a regular salary and qualifying for tuition assistance.

Training for Signal Support Systems Specialists includes 10 weeks of Basic Training, where foundational Soldiering skills are taught, followed by 18 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) that combines hands-on experience with classroom instruction.

Requirements:
  • Military enlistment in the Army National Guard
  • Must be at least a junior in high school or possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Ages 17 to 35
