About The Historic New Orleans Collection

The Historic New Orleans Collection is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the rich cultural heritage of New Orleans. This internship program is designed for individuals interested in museum education and public history, providing a unique opportunity to engage with the community through the lens of chess history.

Internship Focus

Interns will delve into the fascinating history of chess in New Orleans, a city known for its vibrant chess culture since the 1830s. Participants will research notable figures such as Paul Morphy, a prominent chess player of the 19th century, and other significant contributors to the local chess scene.

Research and Development

The internship will involve conducting thorough research on key chess community members, including Alfred Carlin, Michael Starks, and Irene Vines. Interns will compile findings into a structured repository and develop strategies for an Oral History project that captures the narratives of these influential individuals.

Community Engagement

As part of the internship, interns will assist in creating a comprehensive Google Map that highlights important chess landmarks in New Orleans. This resource will serve as a valuable tool for both the local chess community and visitors, featuring links to relevant media, articles, and oral histories.

Intern Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research for educational programming.
  • Contribute creatively to the development of educational content.
  • Design lesson plans and resources that align with academic standards.
  • Formulate a strategic plan for the Chess Community Oral History project.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Must be an undergraduate junior or senior, or a graduate student at a New Orleans-based university.
  • Preferred fields of study include Education, History, Museum Studies, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated interest in history, education, and social justice.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing and communication abilities.

Work Commitment

Interns are expected to dedicate 8-12 hours per week to on-site work. Upon acceptance, interns will coordinate with their project lead to establish a suitable schedule.
