Assistant Professor of Indigenous Construction and Sustainable Practices

Tenure-Track Position

School of Constructed Environments

Parsons School of Design

Parsons School of Design, part of The New School, recognizes the historical and cultural significance of the territories of Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge the vibrant Indigenous community within our urban environment.

Our institution is dedicated to developing educational programs that are rooted in principles of social, racial, gender, disability, and environmental justice. In alignment with this mission, we are initiating several full-time faculty roles focused on Indigenous knowledge and practices. This effort aims to address the historical underrepresentation of Indigenous perspectives in our academic offerings. We welcome applications from individuals whose work reflects a commitment to understanding and engaging with art, design, and strategies that honor the original stewards of the land.

As part of this initiative, we invite applications for a tenure-track role as Assistant Professor of Indigenous Construction and Sustainable Practices within the School of Constructed Environments.

We are looking for candidates who are actively involved in Indigenous construction and sustainable material practices. The ideal applicant will be a practitioner, educator, or researcher who engages with Indigenous frameworks of meaning, history, and culture. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess a profound understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural practices. Candidates whose work incorporates sustainable building practices and addresses climate and environmental justice are especially encouraged to apply. While recognizing the global context of Indigenous construction practices, this position will focus on the Northeast region. Candidates should demonstrate active engagement with Indigenous communities, both locally and more broadly.

The School of Constructed Environments encompasses architecture, interior design, lighting design, and industrial design. Ideal candidates will be able to collaborate effectively within their discipline and across other fields. As one of the few institutions in the country offering comprehensive degrees in these areas, we seek faculty who are committed to both disciplinary excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our school boasts a diverse faculty and student body, fostering the next generation of practitioners who are equipped to design socially equitable, environmentally sustainable, and innovative environments.

The New School is firmly committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the academic community and actively encourages applications from individuals belonging to underrepresented groups.
