The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) operates under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, coordinating patient and family care through the application of the nursing process and LPN competencies. The LPN is responsible for maintaining a practice environment that aligns with the ANA Code for Nurses and the UnityPoint Health Nursing Philosophy, collaborating effectively with the healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence:

  • Oversees and guides unlicensed assistive personnel, applying clinical judgment in accordance with Iowa's LPN regulations, employing problem-solving strategies and effective time management.

Team Collaboration:

  • Contributes to a positive work atmosphere by collaborating with colleagues to develop initiatives aimed at achieving high-quality patient care outcomes. Communicates effectively with team members, physicians, and all stakeholders.

Patient Care Delivery:

  • Adheres to all policies and procedures, guiding team members in compliance. Ensures a safe and sanitary environment, meeting safety goals and infection control standards.

Performance Standards:

  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance to meet departmental needs.
  • Holds and maintains the necessary licenses and certifications for the role.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA, and other relevant regulatory standards.
  • Completes all required annual education and competency assessments on time.
  • Understands compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs and promptly addresses any compliance concerns.
  • Strives to enhance quality and customer service by exceeding expectations.
Qualifications

Education:

Graduate from an accredited nursing program.

Experience:

Prior experience in skilled nursing, long-term care, or acute rehabilitation settings.

Licensure/Certification:

Current licensure in good standing as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Iowa.

Must possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or acquire it within three months of hire.

Must complete NIHSS education prior to the end of orientation and every two years thereafter.

Completion of eight hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually thereafter.

Valid driver's license required for work-related travel.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking fluent English.

Demonstrates cultural sensitivity.

Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

Customer and patient-focused with strong critical thinking abilities.

Additional Information:

Utilizes standard equipment necessary for the role.

Occasional travel to other facilities may be required, using a UnityPoint Health vehicle, rental, or personal vehicle.
