Job Overview

The Brooklyn Kindergarten Society (BKS) has been a pioneer in early childhood education since its inception in 1891. For over 130 years, we have dedicated ourselves to delivering exceptional educational experiences to working families. BKS remains committed to ensuring equitable access to high-quality early childhood education, viewing our mission as a vital first step for the youngest learners in our community.

We offer comprehensive, year-round educational programs and care for children aged 2 to 5 years. Our curriculum is centered around play, integrating literacy, movement, music, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning.

Purpose of the Role

Substitute Lead Teachers (Early Childhood, Preschool, Pre-K) are responsible for managing a classroom in the absence of the regular Early Childhood Education Teacher. They play a crucial role in delivering instruction and maintaining a positive classroom environment. Substitute teachers collaborate closely with staff to facilitate the planning and execution of programs that cater to the educational, social, developmental, and health needs of both the group and individual children.

  • Familiarize yourself with the curriculum posted in each assigned classroom and provide engaging activities that foster curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving appropriate to the children's developmental stages.
  • Implement existing lesson plans prepared by the permanent classroom teacher.
  • If assigned to the same classroom for an extended period, prepare weekly lesson plans following The Creative Curriculum format. Deliver instruction aligned with The Creative Curriculum and Head Start Performance Standards, focusing on children's goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the activities and assignments of teacher assistants working with individual or groups of children.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding family records and communications, including child behavior and parent interactions.
  • Engage in ongoing observations of children's health, behavior, and development, adhering to identified policies and practices.
  • Report any concerns or observations regarding child health and behavior to the permanent Early Childhood Education Teacher and Director.
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher and Director as necessary to review classroom and child data, develop action plans, and support goal achievement.
  • Foster professional, positive relationships with all children, family members, and BKS staff.
  • Assist with classroom opening and closing procedures as scheduled.
  • Direct classroom routines, transitions, and small group activities as assigned.
  • Comply with BKS policies and procedures, ensuring accurate documentation and record-keeping for classroom operations and individual children.
  • Seek and implement feedback to enhance professional performance.
