Our mission is to provide equitable educational beginnings for the youngest learners in our community.

We offer comprehensive, year-round educational programs and care for children aged 2 to 5 years. Our curriculum emphasizes play-based learning, integrating literacy, movement, music, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education.

Purpose of the Role

Substitute Lead Teachers (Early Childhood, Preschool, Pre-K) are responsible for managing a classroom in the absence of the regular Early Childhood Education Teacher. These educators are tasked with delivering instruction and maintaining a conducive learning environment, while collaborating with colleagues to ensure a comprehensive program that addresses the educational, social, developmental, and health needs of both the group and individual children.

  • Prepare weekly lesson plans following The Creative Curriculum format if assigned to the same classroom for an extended period. Deliver instruction aligned with The Creative Curriculum and Head Start Performance Standards, tailored to children's goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the activities and assignments of teacher assistants working with individual or groups of children.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding family records and communications, including child behavior and parent interactions.
  • Engage in ongoing observation of children's health, behavior, and development in accordance with BKS policies and practices.
  • Report any concerns regarding child health and behavior to the permanent Early Childhood Education Teacher and Director.
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher and Director as necessary to review classroom and child data, develop action plans, and support goal achievement.
  • Foster professional, positive relationships with all children, family members, and BKS staff.
  • Assist with classroom opening and closing procedures as scheduled.
  • Direct classroom routines, transitions, and small group activities as assigned.
  • Adhere to BKS policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with documentation and record-keeping responsibilities.
  • Seek and implement feedback to enhance professional performance.
  • Report to work as scheduled at all assigned sites and classrooms.

Additional Responsibilities (10%)

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
