About the Role

AARP is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the State Director for Iowa. As the top position in the state, this individual will be responsible for leading, managing, and engaging staff, volunteers, and community partners to execute organizational priorities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Vision: Develop a state-specific strategic vision that considers organizational priorities, state and local-level needs, and feedback from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advocacy: Direct the development of advocacy strategies at the local, state, and federal levels, collaborating with cross-functional teams and internal/external partners to achieve organizational goals.
  • Communications: Direct the development of communications strategies within the state, targeting priority audiences and geographies, and ensuring the effective use of communications channels and media partnerships.
  • Engagement: Direct the development of engagement strategies, establishing community partnerships and ensuring the engagement of community partners to accomplish strategic objectives.
  • Financial Management: Manage the state office budget to ensure alignment with strategic priorities and meet financial benchmarks.
  • Volunteer Management: Direct the development and support of a team or teams of volunteers to assist in executing the state's strategic plan.
Qualifications
  • Leadership Experience: A minimum of 8 years of extensive, progressively responsible people management experience, with a proven track record of managing a multi-generational workforce.
  • Change Management: Ability to lead and implement change management initiatives, such as digital-first and enhancement of email engagement through effective targeting.
  • Financial Acumen: Understanding of budgeting and forecasting, resource requirements, and ability to align those in the context of a strategic plan.
  • Collaboration: Ability to build collaborative relationships with non-profit, governmental, and business organizations, and experience navigating and/or influencing policymakers and elected officials.
  • Travel: Requires in and out-of-state travel up to 50%, reliable transportation, and evening and weekend hours as required.
