Plant Utilities Assistant

The Plant Utilities Assistant plays a crucial role in the operation, repair, and maintenance of stationary equipment and systems at Stony Brook University's East Campus Power Plant. This position requires a strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, as well as excellent problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities- Assist Plant Utilities Engineers in the operation, repair, and maintenance of pumps, high-pressure steam boilers, high-temperature hot water boilers, and auxiliary heating systems.
- Monitor equipment consoles, reading and analyzing console readings, charts, and trouble calls.
- Adjust equipment controls to correct malfunctions and read and record gas, steam, and water levels.
- Fills out Incident and Quality Assurance Reports and advises supervisors when repairs are required.
- Receives and distributes fuel supplies and performs minor repairs, such as replacing worn gaskets, changing belts, and tightening joints.
- Assists in the repair, maintenance, and operations of alarm and signal systems, energy management systems, and plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration work.
- Performs preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems and cleans strainers and condenser coils.
- Maintains steam traps, changes filters, and determines if refrigeration systems are low on refrigerant.
- Provides instruction to Plant Utilities Helpers on routine jobs and equipment inspection and cleans mechanical rooms as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
- One year of full-time hands-on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities, or performing diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, from ladders, scaffolding, or man lifts over ten feet in height, and to access equipment in low places.
- Must successfully pass a pulmonary function test to be certified to wear protective equipment.
This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, with shift and pass days varied. Night and weekend work required. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for overtime provisions.
The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
