Summary:

The Surgical Technologist will scrub and prepare the sterile field for surgical procedures, cares for instrumentation in an appropriate manner, and assists with the surgical procedures in accordance with hospital regulatory and professional standards.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist physicians with operative procedures efficiently and effectively.
  • Anticipate surgeon/physician's needs in preparing for procedures and during procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of specific responsibilities in emergency situations.
  • Ensure sterility of supplies and instruments during surgical procedures.
  • Handle instruments to prolong their lifespan.
  • Assist in maintaining a sterile environment with the surgical team.
  • Assist in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in accurate and updated physician preference cards.
  • Retain specimens to be sent to pathology and confirm source/name with the surgeon.
  • Transport surgical equipment to cleaning areas and assist with reprocessing instrument sets.
  • Use Standard Universal Precautions and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and infection control surveillance.
  • Follow equipment and safety guidelines and use equipment knowledgeably.
  • Communicate effectively with visitors, physicians, and employees, maintaining patient and employee confidentiality.
  • Maintain designated certifications such as CPR.
  • Comply with Policies and Procedures to ensure a safe work environment.

Requirements:

  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist in Surgery-Certified (TS-C).
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and hospital personnel.
