Position Title: Teaching Associate for the Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education

Overview of the Role:

The Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education is inviting applications for the role of Teaching Associate. This position is ideal for graduate students who are eager to engage in classroom instruction and support the educational mission of the department. Candidates will be selected based on their qualifications, departmental needs, and available funding.

The department retains the authority to select the most suitable candidates for each role and may assign Teaching Associates to various courses based on the curriculum requirements for each semester. Please note that course offerings may change, and employment is not guaranteed from one semester to the next.

Appointment Details:

This position will remain open until filled. Candidates who apply will be informed if no other positions are available.

Weekly Commitment: Students may work up to 20 hours per week, with the following unit guidelines:

  • 1 unit corresponds to 2.66 hours per week.
  • Lab assignments typically range from 1.3 to 5.2 weighted units, depending on course assignments.
  • Lecture assignments generally range from 3 to 6 units, contingent on course and section assignments.
  • A maximum of 6 units is permitted.

Responsibilities: The specific duties of the Teaching Associate may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting classroom instruction and managing student engagement.
  • Holding office hours for student support.
  • Delivering instruction in both classroom and laboratory settings.
  • Assigning tasks and projects to students.
  • Preparing instructional materials.
  • Administering assessments and examinations.
  • Evaluating student performance and assigning grades.
  • Providing assistance to students outside of scheduled class times.
  • Participating in faculty meetings for course coordination and content discussion.
  • Engaging in distance learning initiatives.
  • Performing additional duties that support the instructional goals of the university.

Required Qualifications: To qualify for the Teaching Associate position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Admission to the Master's Program in the Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education, maintaining good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in a minimum of 6 units for the semester or in two courses toward the degree.
  • Proficiency in using computers, including common word-processing software and online educational tools.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
  • Ability to effectively interact with others in an academic setting and a willingness to learn instructional and evaluative techniques.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
  • Expertise in a related natural science discipline.
  • Evidence of or interest in publishing scholarly work.
