Campus Overview:
Kettering Health Dayton has been serving the Dayton community and its surroundings for over 90 years, offering more than 20 specialties, including orthopedics, heart and vascular care, surgical services, and trauma care.

Our facility has recently expanded its Emergency Department and enhanced heart & vascular services with additional catheterization and electrophysiology labs.

We collaborate with local markets to provide fresh produce to our patients every week.

As one of the largest osteopathic teaching hospitals in the United States, we pride ourselves on our 371-bed capacity and numerous accolades, including recognition as a Top 100 Hospital and a Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades.

Responsibilities & Requirements:
External Surgical Technician First Assistants may be eligible for incentives, including a sign-on bonus of up to $20,000 based on experience and employment status (full/part-time). Relocation bonuses are also available, depending on the distance of the move.

The Surgical Technician (ST) First Assist plays a crucial role in providing direct patient care during surgical procedures by preparing and passing sterile instruments to the surgical team under the guidance of the RN and surgeon. This position requires on-call availability and is specifically for the Cardiothoracic and Cardiovascular team.

Key Responsibilities:
The CSFA/CSA may undertake significant surgical tasks under professional supervision, including but not limited to:
- Positioning and prepping patients
- Opening and closing surgical sites
- Dissecting and removing tissue
- Implanting devices
- Altering tissue
- Providing hemostasis
- Suturing
- Applying and removing dressings, splints, and casts
- Administering local and topical agents as ordered
- Placing IVs
- Performing other necessary procedures

The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting in direct patient care, continuously supporting surgeons and nurses by preparing and passing sterile instruments. Their actions and communications should reflect Kettering Health's mission, vision, values, and policies in all interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.

Qualifications:
- Successful completion of the examination for First Assistant certification
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Preferred surgical experience, with a minimum of 4 years if not a graduate of an ST program
- Experience as a Surgical Technician is preferred
- If not certified as a Surgical Technician, certification must be obtained within one year of hire
- CPR certification
- Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Capability to function independently as a surgical technician
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to teach others, given the teaching facility environment
- On-call availability is required.
