Key Responsibilities
Potential Incentives for External Surgical First Assistants:
  • Sign-on Bonus of up to $20,000 based on experience and employment status (full/part-time).
  • Relocation Assistance available (amount may vary based on distance).
  • Returning employees must have been away from Kettering Health for at least 6 months prior to reapplication.

The Surgical Technician First Assist plays a vital role in providing direct patient care during surgical procedures. This includes the selection, preparation, and passing of sterile instruments to the surgeon and surgical team, all under the supervision of the RN and the surgeon. This position requires availability for on-call duties.

Essential Duties:
  • Positioning and prepping patients for surgery.
  • Opening and closing surgical sites.
  • Dissecting and removing tissue as necessary.
  • Implanting medical devices.
  • Altering tissue as required.
  • Providing hemostasis during procedures.
  • Suturing surgical sites.
  • Applying and removing dressings, splints, and casts.
  • Administering local and topical agents as directed.
  • Placing IVs as needed.
  • Performing additional procedures as requested.
  • Supporting the surgical team by ensuring the availability of sterile instruments.
  • Upholding Kettering Health's mission, vision, and values in all interactions.
Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of certification for First Assistant.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred surgical experience, with a minimum of 4 years if not a graduate of a Surgical Technician program.
  • Experience as a Surgical Technician is preferred.
  • If not certified as a Surgical Technician, certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Capable of functioning independently as a Surgical Technician.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to educate others, given the teaching nature of the facility.
  • On-call availability is required.
Preferred Qualifications

Availability for on-call duties with a response time of 30 minutes is required.
