Job Summary:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician will collaborate with Technologists to facilitate the preparation, examination, and evaluation of laboratory samples and specimens. This role involves performing laboratory tests and assessments (including chemical, microbiological, hematological, and blood banking) and generating reports based on findings. The technician will also engage in related technical support activities, such as biological laboratory technician duties, requiring the application of specific methods and techniques relevant to the position. Responsibilities include setting up and operating specialized medical equipment, performing clerical tasks such as typing blood bank records and patient requisition data using a computer terminal, and retrieving test data and reference values electronically. The technician will process specimens for analysis, which may include microbiological samples (such as parasitology, mycology, and bacteriological examinations) and biological fluids (like blood, urine, and sputum). Additionally, the technician will conduct phlebotomy through venipuncture or capillary puncture, either at the patient's bedside or in a laboratory setting for tests such as glucose determinations and urinalysis. They will prepare and instruct patients on procedures for various specimen collections and electronically enter patient demographic data and requested tests. The technician will serve as a control point official and provide budget plan input to leadership as needed. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of 1 year of specialized experience is required.
  • Histology Technicians must demonstrate proficiency in the skills necessary to meet the organization's requirements, including fluency in English.
  • Contract personnel are expected to adhere to the Facility's Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations governing medical staff conduct.
  • Relevant experience includes: (a) Technical laboratory support work involving laboratory tests and assessments (chemical, microbiological, hematological, and blood banking) and report preparation, or (b) technical support in a closely related field, such as biological laboratory technician work, requiring the application of relevant methods and techniques.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift, pull, or push up to 35 pounds.
  • Legible handwriting is essential.
  • Capability to work in environments that may expose individuals to fumes, chemicals, noise, and blood/body fluids.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of an associate degree program, including a training course of approximately one year in a certified laboratory assistant school recognized by a nationally accredited agency.
  • Completion of coursework that includes at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological sciences, along with the training course mentioned above.
  • Alternatively, completion of 2 years of study that includes at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science coursework directly related to the specialization of the position.
  • A current Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist license is required, with proof of licensure to be provided prior to onboarding.
  • All continuing education courses necessary for maintaining licensure must be current.

Training Requirements:

  • All contractor Histology Technicians with access to personal health information (PHI) records must complete Information Security, Privacy Policy, and Rules of Behavior Training before their first scheduled day. This training must also be completed annually.

Work Schedule:

  • Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 6 AM to 2:30 PM PST.
  • The laboratory operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Federal Holidays.
