Tax Compliance Auditor Job Description

We are looking for a Tax Compliance Auditor to become a vital part of our organization. In this role, you will conduct on-site evaluations and reviews of taxpayers' financial records and documentation to assess adherence to various provisions of the New York State Tax Law. This position offers a variety of responsibilities and opportunities for professional growth.

Essential Qualifications
  • Must be reachable on the eligible list for this title and location under Civil Service Law, Rules and Regulations
  • OR
  • Must qualify for a 70.1 transfer under Civil Service Law, Rules and Regulations
  • Bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation -OR- Bachelor's degree with 18 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation and six credit hours in finance, money and banking, economics, or business
  • If eligible via 55 b/c, please provide a copy of your active letter of eligibility with your response

*This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment.

Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications

Auditor Trainee 1 (SG-14):

  • Bachelor's degree with 24 credits in accounting, auditing, or taxation

Auditor Trainee 2 (SG 16):

  • Meet the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications AND have 1 year of experience -OR- Meet the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications AND hold a Master's degree, including 15 credits in accounting, auditing, or taxation

Auditor 1 (SG 18):

  • Meet the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications AND have 2 years of experience -OR- Meet the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications AND possess a CPA license in NYS -OR- Meet the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications AND hold a Master's degree, including 15 credits in accounting, auditing, or taxation, AND have 1 year of experience

*Experience must be gained in roles such as accountant, internal auditor, accountant with responsibility for accounting systems, accountant in private accounting practice, field auditor, or accountant/auditor specializing in tax law.

Key Responsibilities of the Tax Compliance Auditor include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct thorough audits and reviews of taxpayers' financial records
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of tax legislation and departmental procedures
  • Effectively communicate with supervisors, taxpayers, and/or their representatives
  • Continuously enhance skills in computer technology
  • Travel frequently, both locally and for overnight assignments
  • Represent the Audit Division at conferences and hearings
  • Engage in the audit selection process
