We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Library Information Assistant to join our team at The New York Public Library. As a key member of our library staff, you will provide exceptional service to patrons of all ages, assisting with information queries, circulation services, and supporting outreach and programming activities.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide circulation and reference services to library patrons, utilizing print, media, and digital resources.
- Answer questions from the public in person, over the telephone, and electronically, demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Perform community outreach to promote and increase public participation and use of library services.
- Assist in planning and delivering library programs for children, teens, and adults, showcasing creativity and enthusiasm.
- Instruct patrons on the use of the Internet, computer applications, and other library services, ensuring a high level of technical expertise.
- Manage fines and fees, collection development, reserves, and opening/closing procedures, demonstrating attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ensure patrons adhere to library policies and procedures, maintaining a positive and respectful environment.
- May assume responsibility for the facility, staff, and operations in the absence of the Library Manager, demonstrating leadership and problem-solving abilities.
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably with a strong liberal arts background.
- Successful public service experience, with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team, with a strong appreciation for literature and a desire to encourage reading in others.
- Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.
- Proficiency in computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs, and e-reader devices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer services, including online searching, social media, and reference resources and databases.
- Preferred language: Spanish.
- Public service library.
- Lifting up to 15 lbs.
- Sitting and standing for periods of time.
- Daily use of a computer.
- Local 1930.
- Non-Exempt.
- 17.5 hours per week, to be scheduled during branch hours.
