Position Overview
The Healthcare Support Specialist is responsible for assisting healthcare providers in delivering comprehensive patient care. Key responsibilities include preparing patients for examinations, gathering medical histories, supporting medical procedures, collecting specimens, managing inventory, and performing various administrative tasks as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Administrative Duties:
- Handle incoming calls regarding test results, medication refills, follow-up visits, and appointment scheduling.
- Prepare patients for consultations, ensuring they are ready for the physician's instructions.
- Coordinate follow-up appointments for nursing care.
Clinical Duties:
- Collect urine samples and document medical histories accurately.
- Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, and weight.
- Verify that laboratory results and other reports are included in patient charts.
- Perform blood draws for laboratory tests as directed by the physician and process urinalysis samples.
- Send specimens to the laboratory with the required documentation.
- Educate patients on catheter care, self-catheterization, and preparation for medical procedures.
- Conduct and/or arrange phlebotomy as necessary.
- Organize paper labs and imaging for physician review.
- Ensure all medical equipment is functioning properly.
- Maintain logs for medications, noting expiration dates.
- Clean, wrap, and sterilize medical instruments.
Qualifications:
Educational Background:
- Required: Completion of a one-year certificate program from a college or technical school; or three to six months of relevant experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
- Preferred: Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
Experience:
- Preferred: At least five years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Required: Certification from a Medical Assistant program.
- Required: Current CPR certification.
- Preferred: CMA or RMA certification.
Skills and Abilities:
To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties effectively. The following skills are essential:
- Communication Skills: Proficient in reading and interpreting safety protocols, operational instructions, and procedural manuals. Capable of writing routine reports and communicating effectively with groups.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to address practical challenges and manage various concrete variables in diverse situations.
- Mathematical Skills: Competence in basic arithmetic operations and the ability to interpret data through graphs.
Additional Knowledge:
- Familiarity with computer applications, including practice management and electronic health records.
- General understanding of urological procedures.
- Proficient in using office equipment such as computers, fax machines, and copy machines.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and documentation is highly advantageous.
