KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and facilitate a child-focused, inclusive after-school environment for a mixed-grade elementary class.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive after-school curriculum that is engaging, developmentally appropriate, and hands-on, incorporating at least three 6-week Project-Based Learning units throughout the academic year, focusing on themes such as physical activities, arts, sciences, and ecology.
  • Oversee at least one part-time assistant, with potential additional supervisory duties for support staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Engage in a minimum of 5 hours of collaborative work within the school-day classrooms each week, providing individualized support to students and assisting teachers with curriculum delivery and differentiated instruction.
  • Participate in relevant school-day meetings, including IEP discussions and family conferences, as needed.
  • Foster partnerships with other DHSP youth programs to enhance services for Cambridge families.
  • Maintain a comprehensive "child growth portfolio" for each student, documenting progress, activities, and lesson plans throughout the school year.
  • Encourage family involvement in the educational process.
  • Manage the classroom budget, including supply orders, field trip planning, and coordination with external consultants.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities provided by external service providers.
  • Participate in ongoing staff development initiatives to improve program quality and practices.
  • Uphold professional standards by adhering to program policies and maintaining effective communication with staff, families, and service providers.
  • Perform additional related duties as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience working with children in grades K-5, preferably in after-school settings, preschools, urban youth programs, or mental health services.
  • Strong commitment to the benefits of after-school programming for children and the integration of after-school and school-day experiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A sense of humor and the ability to serve as a positive role model.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Experience working with families from diverse backgrounds, facilitating effective communication and relationships.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to anti-bias and culturally responsive practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Dedication to continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from various identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in child/youth development, education, social work, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a supervisory role is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar software, along with experience in computer-based lesson planning.
  • Bilingual or bicultural candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Familiarity with Nurtured Heart Approach techniques and/or Responsive Classroom strategies is a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is typically loud, including classrooms and outdoor playgrounds, with occasional field trips.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Employees are frequently required to sit, talk, walk, and hear, and may occasionally need to run in response to emergencies. Engaging with children at their level is common, and employees must be able to lift or move children as necessary.
