The City of Cambridge's Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents through a variety of essential services.

Our programs cater to a diverse range of community needs, supporting individuals from infancy to senior citizens, including school-aged children and families in need.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the guidance of the Afterschool Manager, the Lead Educator will:


Possess a thorough understanding of EEC licensing standards and ensure compliance with these regulations along with DHSP policies.

Develop a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate, focusing on the social, physical, academic, and emotional growth of children.

The curriculum should foster social skills, boost self-esteem, acknowledge children's interests, and cultivate a sense of community.

Plan and execute activities that align with curriculum objectives in a nurturing and secure environment suitable for after-school hours.

Address children's academic needs by providing assistance with homework and integrating school-day learning with after-school activities whenever feasible.

Organize and arrange classroom settings to facilitate a variety of activities that encourage children's independence.

Oversee the Teacher, Assistant Teacher, and additional support staff. Hold weekly planning meetings and maintain records of these sessions. Conduct regular individual supervision meetings to provide continuous support and guidance to staff.


Ensure effective communication with school-day educators and administrators regarding children's academic, social, and physical requirements.

Conduct routine classroom observations during school hours and prepare written progress reports for each child biannually.


Foster collaborations with other DHSP youth-serving divisions to enhance services for Cambridge families.

Maintain open lines of communication with parents through daily interactions and scheduled meetings. Gather parental insights to tailor behavioral and instructional strategies. Organize three parent engagement nights each academic year.


Prepare and submit monthly program calendars, newsletters, and notices to the Afterschool Manager for approval prior to distribution.

Ensure a clean and organized classroom environment, including daily cleaning tasks and periodic deep cleaning. Involve children in maintaining the classroom's cleanliness as part of the program structure.

Conduct daily safety checks of the facility, including securing doors and activating alarms as necessary.

Maintain a safe classroom environment, free from hazardous materials or equipment, and report any repair needs to the Afterschool Manager.


Participate in meetings organized by the Division Head or Afterschool Manager, including curriculum discussions, training workshops, and policy reviews.

Engage in additional training opportunities as schedules allow.

Attend program-related meetings, including those with parents, the Afterschool Manager, and program consultants.


Contribute to ongoing program quality improvement initiatives, which include classroom observations, debriefing sessions, action planning, and participation in a peer learning community.

Assist in the recruitment and training of new staff as needed.

Conduct orientation sessions for new employees.

Plan and coordinate field trip logistics.

Manage the pick-up of children from designated locations.

Order and serve nutritious snacks daily, preparing menus and documentation in accordance with nutrition program guidelines.

Complete performance evaluations for the Teacher, Assistant Teacher, and other support staff biannually.

Maintain awareness of program expenditures, ensuring alignment with budgetary constraints. Order necessary curriculum materials and classroom supplies.

Actively participate in and support the Department's Race and Equity Initiative.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

A minimum of a bachelor's degree or an associate degree with 9 months of supervised experience working with children,

or

a bachelor's degree in early childhood education with 6 months of supervised experience,

or

a high school diploma with 12 months of supervised experience working with children.

First Aid and CPR certification is preferred or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Applicants must successfully complete the EEC background record check process, which includes a CORI, SORI, DCF check, and fingerprinting.

Additional training and experience are preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS


Must be agile, able to move quickly from sitting to standing and kneeling to engage with children at their level.

Employees may need to run after children during play or in emergencies.

Must be able to hear children speaking softly or mumbling when distressed.

Must be capable of using hands and arms to move, reach, handle, and manipulate classroom objects, including moving furniture during reorganization.

Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move a child.

Vision abilities are essential for supervising children.

The noise level in the work environment can be moderately to very loud, including classrooms, outdoor playgrounds, and occasional field trips.
