ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
The City of Cambridge's Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) is dedicated to developing and coordinating initiatives that improve the quality of life for residents. Our comprehensive services cater to a diverse range of community needs, supporting individuals from infancy to seniority, and addressing various challenges faced by families and local organizations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
In collaboration with the Head Teacher and under the guidance of the Afterschool Manager, the After School Program Educator will:
- Contribute to the creation of a well-rounded curriculum aimed at fostering the social, physical, academic, and intellectual growth of children. The curriculum will focus on enhancing social skills, boosting self-esteem, acknowledging children's interests, and cultivating a sense of community.
- Design and execute engaging activities that align with curriculum objectives in a nurturing and secure environment suitable for after-school hours.
- Address students' academic requirements by offering homework assistance and connecting after-school learning with daytime educational experiences whenever feasible.
- Assist the Head Teacher in establishing connections with daytime educators and administrators regarding the academic, social, educational, and physical needs of the children.
- Conduct regular observations in the classroom during school hours and prepare written progress assessments for each child biannually.
- Collaborate with the Head Teacher to foster partnerships with other youth-serving divisions within the Department of Human Service Programs to enhance support for Cambridge families.
- Maintain consistent communication with parents through daily interactions and discussions, seeking their insights to tailor behavioral and instructional strategies. Together with the Head Teacher, organize three parent engagement events throughout the academic year.
- Assist the Head Teacher in preparing and submitting monthly program calendars, newsletters, and notices for parental approval before distribution.
- Ensure a tidy classroom environment through daily cleaning tasks and involve children in maintaining the space as part of the program's structure.
- Engage in meetings organized by the Division Head or Afterschool Manager, including curriculum discussions, training sessions, policy reviews, and mandatory orientations.
- Participate in additional workshops and training opportunities as schedules allow.
- Attend program-related meetings, including staff gatherings, parent discussions, and consultations with the Afterschool Manager.
- Contribute to ongoing quality improvement initiatives within the program, including classroom evaluations, feedback sessions, action planning, and involvement in a peer learning community.
- Welcome children at designated locations and ensure their safe transition to program areas.
- Share responsibilities for planning and preparing nutritious snacks for the children.
- In the absence of the Head Teacher, take on essential duties to ensure a successful after-school program, including supervising the Assistant Teacher and other support staff while adhering to relevant regulations and policies.
- Actively participate in and promote the Department's Race and Equity Initiative.
- Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill essential job functions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a minimum of an associate or bachelor's degree with at least three months of supervised experience working with children, or have a high school diploma or equivalent with nine months of supervised experience.
- First Aid and CPR certification is preferred or must be obtained within six months of hire.
- Must successfully complete the EEC background record check process, including CORI, SORI, DCF checks, and fingerprinting.
- Additional training and experience are preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to move quickly and agilely, transitioning from sitting to standing or kneeling to engage with children at their level.
- Ability to hear children speaking softly or expressing distress.
- Ability to use hands and arms for movement, reaching, handling, and manipulating classroom objects, including occasional furniture rearrangement.
- Ability to lift and/or move children as necessary.
- Vision capabilities are essential for supervising children effectively.
- The work environment is typically loud, including classrooms, outdoor play areas, and occasional field trips.
