Job Summary

The Chicago Public Schools is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Executive Director of Humanities and Health to lead the Department of Humanities and Health. This is a critical role that requires a strong leader who can drive strategic planning, vision, and execution to ensure that every Chicago Public Schools student receives a high-quality education in language arts, social science, and physical education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Planning and Vision
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for the Department of Humanities and Health that aligns with the district's vision and goals.
    • Establish clear objectives and priorities for the department, and ensure that all team members are aligned and working towards these goals.
  • Leadership and Team Management
    • Lead a high-performing team of direct reports, providing coaching, guidance, and support to ensure that they have the skills and resources needed to succeed.
    • Develop and implement effective strategies for talent management, including recruitment, retention, and professional development.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including network teams, principals, teachers, and support staff.
    • Partner with various CPS offices and departments to address high-priority internal and external affairs, including district policy recommendations and board actions.
  • Operational Management
    • Oversee the department's budget, ensuring that financial resources are allocated effectively and efficiently.
    • Manage the department's procurement and payroll processes, as well as grant administration.
  • Communication and Representation
    • Serve as the district's representative and subject matter expert for Humanities and Health.
    • Coordinate media requests and information, and provide strategic communication support to the district.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university.
    • Master's or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience
    • Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant professional leadership experience in the education field.
    • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a supervisory role leading a team of direct reports.
    • Minimum of five (5) years working with adult learners, including creating, organizing, and facilitating professional learning experiences.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Expertise in planning, designing, facilitating, and evaluating professional learning.
    • Deep knowledge/understanding of the CPS Instructional Core Vision and commitment to ensuring that all students have access to grade-level, standards-aligned learning opportunities.
    • Strong leadership and team building skills, including the ability to develop high-performing teams united around a clear vision for serving schools and achieving student success.
    • Effective strategic planning capabilities, including the ability to establish and articulate a vision and goals, set high standards, and effectively guide individuals and teams in the realization of expectations set.
Conditions of Employment
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency
    • Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19
    • Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire.
