Job Title: Human Resource Director
The Human Resources Director is directly responsible for the direction, administration, and coordination of all Human Resources functions for the Leslie Shankman School Corporation, including the Hyde Park Day School and the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of the Corporation and is a strategic and key position in our organization.
The Leslie Shankman School Corporation (LSSC) operates two private special education schools, the Hyde Park Day School, and the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School. Our operating budget is approximately $20 million. We have 3 locations and approximately 160 employees. The LSSC provides business and administrative support to the schools it operates. We are a team of 7 employees and as a relatively small organization, our professionals have broad responsibilities and relationships across the organization. We are looking for a team player and a professional who is comfortable in this complex work environment.
It is critical for success that the candidate can work independently, problem solve in a complex organization, and understand how various solutions may impact the organization's various entities. It is also essential that this candidate has strong communication and interpersonal skills and can be viewed as a knowledgeable resource for assistance with solving HR problems by management across our organization.
Essential Responsibilities:
Leadership

  • Member of the leadership team. Participates in leadership and departmental staff meetings and attends other meetings as needed.
  • Collaborates with all leadership team members to create a culture of customer service, inclusivity, quality, integrity, and accountability.
  • Establish oneself as a key resource for solving HR problems and implementing HR policies.
  • Strategic Leadership is required in the following ways:
    • Identifies and provides solutions to address problems and implement solutions.
    • Supports the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce.
    • Actively incorporates best workplace practices
    • Develops strategies within HR that best support our mission

Employee Relations & Staff Development

  • Coaches and advises managers how to handle employee issues to ensure that employees are treated fairly and consistently within the law. Recommends disciplinary action up to and including termination when necessary and guides manager efforts through this process.
  • Serves as a point of contact for employees who wish to address their concerns regarding their employment and their work with management to resolve their concern.
  • Recommends, evaluates, and participates in staff development for the organization.
  • Executes the performance management plans to ensure that all employees receive timely feedback at the designated intervals (i.e., 90 days and annual reviews).
  • Ensures that all established training requirements are met for each employee.
  • Consults with legal counsel as appropriate on personnel matters.

Recruitment

  • Along with each schools' Executive Directors, The HR Director is responsible for leading and overseeing recruitment and staffing efforts for all exempt, nonexempt and temporary workers; writes and places job postings; works with supervisors to screen and interview candidates; and supervises the completion of background and references checks as required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the current labor market, practices and trends and develops corresponding and timely recruitment and outreach.
  • Leads initiatives to recruit a diverse workforce
  • Manages the onboarding procedures by preparing for and conducting new hire orientation.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight of all the employee benefit programs in consultation with the CFO, to include benefits research, recommendations for improvement, renewal, open enrollment, coverage changes and billing.
  • The HR Director is responsible for benefits administration and record keeping (i.e., open enrollment process, invoices, scheduling meetings and info sessions, data entry/data management, including employee's leave time activity, accruals and balances, work comp and FMLA documents). The HR Assistant and Payroll specialists assists with these processes.
  • Partner with senior leadership to design compensation and incentive plans to retain and promote positive performance.

Competencies:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to solve complex problems, and the ability to synthesize data from various sources.
  • Strong familiarity with a variety of performance management principles, practices and tools.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office required and the ability to learn to use Human Resource/Payroll Systems Software.
  • Expert knowledge in the areas of cultural sensitivity and implicit workplace bias.
  • Strong, up to date knowledge of employment laws and regulations applicable to our employees is required.
  • Understanding of faculty and staff Recruitment tools and processes desired.
  • The ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies is required.
  • Commitment to remaining current in all practice and policy related to School HR and best practice.

Education, Experience or Certifications:
Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • Advanced degree in a related field preferred.
  • Professional HCRI or SHRM Certification preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 years of Human Resources experience with 3-5 years in a Human Resources leadership role in a diverse work environment is required.
  • Experience in an educational setting preferred, but not required.
  • Experience working in school settings and with school faculty preferred.
  • Expertise and significant experience in employee relations preferred

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Hybrid schedule - however, we are a school with staff on-site every day and this candidate must have flexibility in their ability to be onsite to meet each school's needs.
  • Ability to sit for 2 hours to 4 hours.
  • Ability to use computers extensively.
