Position Overview

The Kids In Crisis TeenTalk initiative is dedicated to offering essential mental health assistance and resources aimed at guiding adolescents through challenging situations, preventing crises, managing emergencies during and after school hours, achieving academic excellence, and enhancing their prospects for safe and productive adult lives.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The TeenTalk Mental Health Counselor plays a vital role in delivering confidential counseling and support to students and families within the designated educational institutions and the surrounding community. This position involves collaboration with existing student support services and school personnel to identify at-risk youth and implement suitable measures for early evaluation and intervention.


COUNSELING FOR AT-RISK YOUTH IN A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

  • Conduct assessments and provide counseling tailored to the psycho-social needs of students.
  • Respond to referrals from peers, parents, and school staff.
  • Maintain a visible and approachable presence among students.
  • Collaborate effectively with in-school support services and staff.
  • Perform assessments related to substance use and high-risk behaviors.
  • Facilitate referrals to both school services and external resources.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of client records.
  • Promote awareness of after-hours support services available through Kids In Crisis.
  • Participate in on-call coverage for Kids In Crisis.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

ENGAGEMENT IN SCHOOL MEETINGS/COMMITTEES/GROUPS

  • Deliver educational sessions in health classes.
  • Contribute to the school Safety/Crisis team.
  • Establish connections with community organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS (minimum requirements)

  • Proven experience working with middle and high school age groups.
  • Understanding of issues impacting adolescents, including substance use.
  • Capability to facilitate individual, family, and group counseling sessions.
  • Familiarity with procedures for identifying and reporting abuse and neglect.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with school administration, staff, community organizations, and individuals.
  • Knowledge of community resources accessible to youth and their families.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, encompassing both written and verbal interactions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • A Master's degree from an accredited institution in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of counseling experience, including crisis intervention, with middle and high school age youth, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
