The primary objective of this position at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority is to foster an environment that empowers inmates to enhance their skills in selecting rehabilitative resources that can be utilized upon their release. This role involves providing leadership and organization for both new and existing programs aimed at inmates, including a comprehensive curriculum delivered in a classroom format.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments of inmates for various programs.
- Develop and prepare educational materials for diverse subject areas.
- Facilitate class sessions utilizing group discussions, lectures, audiovisual aids, and supplementary materials.
- Monitor and evaluate inmate progress through direct observation, assessments, and documentation of case files.
- Offer individual and group counseling, as well as crisis intervention when necessary.
- Assess inmate progress to determine the need for reclassification.
- Assist inmates in connecting with community resources.
- Participate in the initial intake process, including interviewing and classifying inmates for housing and program assignments.
- Support the coordination of inmate work programs.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Services, or a related field (such as Social Work or Psychology) is preferred, along with two years of experience in individual and group interactions. Experience in a detention or security facility is advantageous. Candidates should possess effective verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse population from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus. Familiarity with the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Corrections Standards for Local Jails and Lockups is beneficial. Completion of law enforcement training may be required.
