Under the guidance of a Police Sergeant, the Campus Safety Officer is responsible for patrolling the college grounds to ensure the safety and security of the campus community, facilities, and assets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains comprehensive knowledge of all relevant laws, as well as the policies and procedures of the Public Safety Department and Babson College.

Ensures adherence to the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the policies of Babson College, prioritizing the protection of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Proactively works to prevent theft, vandalism, trespassing, and other violations, while investigating and documenting incidents according to established protocols.

Engages with the community by providing various services and assistance, acting as a resource for members of the Babson College community.

Handles additional responsibilities including traffic and parking enforcement, conducting foot and mobile patrols, managing communications and dispatching, ensuring safety at campus events, and responding to both routine and emergency calls.

May provide testimony in criminal court proceedings and participate in internal processes related to community standards.

May also assist in training other Public Safety personnel as needed.

TEAM STRUCTURE

Generally operates under the supervision of a Sergeant or higher-ranking officer but may be called upon to oversee personnel of equal or lower rank.

EDUCATION AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Preferred: Associate's Degree; other qualifications may be considered based on equivalent experience as determined by the Chief of Police or their designee in collaboration with Human Resources.

Completion of a full-time police academy certified by the Massachusetts Police Training Council or equivalent training is required.

Must possess basic police firearms training and qualification, as well as compliance with OSHA regulations regarding Hepatitis B vaccination.

Familiarity with modern public safety practices, including patrol, communication, emergency medical services, investigation, and crime prevention, with a commitment to community policing principles.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to assess emergency and non-emergency situations effectively.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with knowledge of criminal laws and court procedures.

Demonstrated commitment to providing law enforcement and security services in a diverse community that values individual differences.

Proficiency in technology related to Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), records management systems, and Microsoft Office applications is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Flexibility in working hours, schedules, and overtime is necessary. Responsibilities may include both virtual and in-person roles, including training and community engagement activities.

Must maintain a valid U.S. Driver's License and meet insurability criteria throughout employment.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

Must obtain and retain authority as a special state police officer in accordance with Massachusetts General Law and meet all certification requirements.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act, responsible for reporting criminal offenses to the Public Safety Department.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience in law enforcement, particularly within a college or university setting, is preferred.

Specialized training and certifications in public safety are highly desirable.
